The Advantages of Dual Citizenship
Life is so much easier with two passports, especially if one of those passports is from the US. I was lucky because my mother is an American citizen but I was born in the UK. Hence, the dual citizenship. A few of my friends have two passports as well. One is Canadian and American, one is Australian and American, and one is from New Zealand but was born in the UK.
My Dad, who is a UK citizen, lives in the US now on a green card. Most of the people I know who have green cards are Mexican but living in the States. The green card is hideous! They make you turn your head slightly so that both of your eyes are visible but only one ear. It’s bizarre!
Luckily my Dad didn’t have a very difficult process to go through when he was applying for the green card. A lot of Mexican people need to get abogados de inmigracion or immigration lawyers in order to gain citizenship in the US or to obtain a green card.
Whenever I travel, I just use the passport that I think would give me the least hassle at border control or immigration. For example, when I’m flying between the US and the UK, I bring both passports. When I arrive in the US, I show my US passport and whizz through the lines. Same for when I’m in the UK; I just use my UK passport. It feels a bit like cheating sometimes, but it’s a great advantage!
