The interim Digital Britain Report, that was recently released, has dwelled more on Britain’s status concerning the current state of its digital communication network and the steps needed to upgrade it to be at par with other leading nations.

A discussion surrounding the report was held with Lord Carter, the Communications Minister, answering questions from the MPs. The minister informed that approximately 20% of the media services in Britain were being accessed through the Internet and it was imperative to scale-up the existing broadband network to keep pace with the technology. He also mentioned that the immediate aim was to connect people across the country through improved and faster broadband services that would offer at least a 2Mbps speed.

During the discussion, some concerns were expressed regarding the large expenditure that such an upgrade would need. Lord Carter pointed out that the government would partner with private players to fund the plan, and there was a good chance that the BBC would be involved in such an arrangement.

Lord Carter emphasized that all forms of broadband connectivity need to be upgraded or expanded. This includes fixed line connections, mobile broadband and even satellite communication. He also said that appropriate adjustments in European Law concerning broadband need to be made to increase the minimum speed from 56Kbps to the desired 2Mbps.
