Hairspray is the story of a blissful kid named Tracy Turnblad, a wannabe performer who wants to gain a position on a neighbouring television programme named the Corny Collins Show. The programme is really based on a Baltimore-based programme referred to as the Buddy Dean Show in Baltimore, Maryland.
Tracy is unheard of in the performing arts arena when she auditions, yet she is selected for one of the dancing parts and with long odds turns out to be a dancing celebrity almost overnight. Tracy is happy by this newfound celebrity status, and she makes the decision to utilise her reputation to bring about positive improvements to the television program. The fundamental basis for these positive improvements is to do with race. Tracy aims to racially integrate the television show, and as one might guess, Tracy is met with a considerable amount of conflict.
Hairspray came to the West End in two-thousand & seven, opening for press at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October 11, before being uncovered to the general public at its real opening on October thirtieth, two-thousand & seven. The theatrical production has featured some well known actors — Michael Ball plays the part of Edna Turnblad, Tracy’s mother, delivering marvellous rendition in this taxing female role, whilst Mel Smith played joke shop proprietor Wilbur Turnblad, Tracy’s father. Ben Ellis is terrific as link & Leanne Jones as Tracey & Michael Ball, well they are all simply marvellous. The musical play hairspray is certainly my favourite, its bubbly & if you are feeling a tad bit low then it will make you feel a whole lot better.
